Yellow Wallpaper
When i first started reading Yellow Wallpaper, I was very confused and I don't think i was alone on that! But as I read along the story started to make more sense.
After reading the story I was under the impression that it was about a women that was being held back by her controlling husband and she finally broke free once she "ripped off the wallpaper". But after discussion in class I have somewhat changed my reasoning. Although i still continue to believe that her husband was controlling, I now think that there was true pyschological problems with the main character that was left un-named.
The women in the story mentions a child that she had recently given birth to and gives no hints that she is in contact with the child. Although I don't know much about this topic there may be a possibility of post-pardom depression. She also goes on to make many references to her being somewhat of a child and not so much as an adult.
When she speaks of the women in that is "creeping" along in the walls behind the wallpaper, I think that is a metaphor for herself. She was constantly referring to how she would "creep" and "sulk" about the room and looking out the windows. And thats basically what the women in the wallpaper was doing, "creeping" behind the torn wallpaper. She also refers to how disgusting and gross the color of the wallpaper was and that might have some connection of what her life is like at the time.
At the end of the story is when she has the major break through when she rips off the wallpaper. I think that symbolizes her leaving her state of depression.
